Movie mini review: Hell Ride

A few days ago I had the pleasure of watching Hell Ride, the Quentin Tarantino-produced, Larry Bishop-written-and-directed biker movie.
It’s a good mix of sex, drugs and violence – the kind of movie you’ll enjoy watching with a few friends and a few beers.

Larry Bishops character Pistolero is leading the motorcycle gang Victors, where Michael Madsen and Eric Balfour also has their allegiance. The rival gang, Six-six-six (led by the character played by Vinnie Jones) is basically out to eliminate the competition, and hard feelings arise. Throw in a 32-year old murder, a safety deposit box with three keys, David Carradine and Dennis Hopper, and you get yourself a Hell Ride.

It’s not a great movie. But it’s a darn good and entertaining one.

Movie mini review: Let the Right One In

Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to see Tomas Alfredson’s screen adaption of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s superb novel.
It is a drama about a harassed 12-year old boy (Oskar) making friends with what he thinks is a girl (Eli). It soon obvious to the audience that Eli is in fact a vampire. Sounds cheesy? It ain’t. It is a gripping film which gets into your skin. Never boring, always keeping the pace. Since I read the book two or three years ago, I knew about what was going to happen. However, I still found it exciting and didn’t want it to be over.
There were a few scenes however that I sorely missed from the book – mostly the flashback where Eli’s origin from the 18th* century is explained. The scar is shown in the movie, but there is no explanation for it. Several main characters are also missing or radically reduced, but since the movie already spans almost two hours, it is understandable that didn’t incorporate them into the screen version. But it did make me want to read the book again.

To cut it shourt: Let the Right One In is the best Swedish movie that I have seen in many years.
The book is (as in most cases) better than the movie, but I am still very happy with the adaptation.

* Don’t remember exactly, +/- a century.

Free Office 2007

The other day when I was at Webhallen to pick up my Eee 1000H, there were signs posted all over the store. On the back of all registry terminals, on big buttons on all the staff saying “Oops! Did we forget to ask if you want Office 2007? If so, you get it for free when you buy a new computer“.

The guy serving me forgot. I even got a receipt for 990SEK (with a 990SEK discount) for it.

So it’s up for sale on Tradera now if anyone wants it. 🙂

World’s energy/pollution problem solved?

A Korean research institute claims to have found a way to separate hydrogen from water in a way that is extremely more efficient than the electrolytic methods used today. Apparently, only about 2.3% of the energy required today is needed, which will make hydrogen as a fuel 20-30 times cheaper.

As you may know, the only byproduct when hydrogen is used as fuel is H2O, also known as water.

From an environmental point of view, hydrogen is sometimes considered the ideal fuel. It burns at concentrations of 4% or more H2 in air, and makes up 75% of the mass and 90% of the atoms in the universe.

Birthday party x 2

Yesterday we were at two parties (and in between a party of our own)

First at Andreas, turning 30 – Relaxed, nerdy and fun. Really tasty carrot cake!

Then at Anders, turning 40 – Loud, wild and fun. By the time we got there, everyone was already quite drunk, and shortly thereafter the cigars came out (Literally, not metaphorically).

Somehow I ended up being DJ for a part of the night, and actually got a lot of compliments for my music choices. 🙂

Kulturhusnatten – The Culture House Night

This Friday me and some friends went to an event taking place in the Stockholm Culture House.

The small 30SEK fee gave you entrance to a large amount of short concerts, performances, movies, exhibitions and such.

Especially good were:

  • George Kentros & Matthias Peterson, with an interpretation of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons that involved sampling a live violin and playing back distorted loops – Industrial Violin!
  • Abalone Dots, playing bluegrass with a touch of Swedish Folk Music – Softgrass.
  • Short film festival – Oue!
  • Klubb Sunkit – the club for odd and forgotten pop music – Muzak, Easy Listening, Exotica and Swedish Dance Band.

After a couple of hours we all needed to go somewhere more quiet, so we went to Kasper for beer.

Today’s music tip: Freewheel

Today I found a song called Sweet Swedish Winter by a band called Freewheel. First I though that it was an American band from the 60’s, judging by the style of the music and the recording itself, but it turned out to be a Swedish band from 1998. They apparently published just one album (Starfriend) and then disappeared (Sweet Swedish Winter is in my opinion the best song on the album).

Soundwise it’s a bit unpolished, sometimes a bit off-key, but with a certain charm.

Buy or download the album if you can find it. The music makes you happy. 🙂
