To buy or not to buy – regarding laundry

For the last two years or so I’ve become increasingly irritated when doing the laundry.
What mostly bother me is the following:

  • About half the time people have been using twice the amount of detergent in the machine, resulting in leftovers that will go into the next wash that I have to clean up before doing my laundry. Since M has a very allergic skin we have to use a special non-allergic laundry detergent, and having to remove old lumps of strongly perfumed detergent isn’t fun.
  • People can’t read instructions. They often put powder detergent in the compartment for liquid detergent, resulting in it being completely clogged as this only uses a thin pipe for the detergent to pass. Which I have to clean.
  • People do not empty the fuzz from the tumbler-drier. Which I have to clean unless I want more fuzz, feathers and other stuff on our clothes.
  • People leave detergent powder on the clothes table used for folding clothes. Which I have to clean.
  • About everything that you should clean after laundry (machines, tables, floors…) is often dirty, sticky or powdery.

-So talk to your neighbors about it!

No can do. The wash house is shared on over 100 households, and the digital booking system doesn’t allow you to see who had the pass before you. And I doubt writing angry notes will help much.

Generally, it’s all about cleaning up after others in order to do our laundry that I’m tired of. So I’m thinking about buying my own washing machine.
A washing machine with A+ energy class costs about 5000 SEK including delivery and installation, so with the electrical cost and divided over 5 years (I have no idea how long you usually keep a washing machine so that is just a guess) it will cost about 25 SEK per week. After 5 years the cost drops to about 4 SEK / week based on todays electrical price. Water is included in the rent so that is not a problem.

The drawback is that it takes a bit of space and the clothes will have to dry in the apartment instead of in the washing house on the inner courtyard. On the other side I don’t have to go back and forth to the washing house on the inner courtyard every time. 😉 And I can wash whenever I need without having to book a time days ahead.

Has anyone ever regretted buying their own washing machine and prefer going to a washing room shared with hundreds of other people?

440 kilometers by moped

Tomorrow I will possibly have the worst trip of my life so far. Or the most boring, back-aching, cold and lonely. Or the best.

Anyway, I will attempt to drive my Gilera Runner (50cc) från Stockholm to Ulricehamn, a trip that totals about 440 kilometers. I will make a stop (and possibly spend the night) in Tibro, but have otherwise no plans besides hourly stops to stretch, eat, and so on.

Why? The practical reason is that I’m going to store the moped at my parents place during the winter, but the other reason is probably just for the heck of it. “Because it’s there”, as a mountain climber would say. When I was 15 I wanted to go on a moped vacation with my friends, but that never happened so perhaps I’m subconsciously compensating for it now. 😉
To quote the great Waylon Jennings: I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane.

To see the route I’ll likely take: Google Maps

Now: Time to pack.

Update:

A few miles from Katrineholm
A few miles from Katrineholm

The  trip went great! I took the whole trip in one day, only staying for a pizza with my friend Dossen in Tibro instead of spending the night there.

Total travel time: 12½ hours, including a total of about 3½ hours of breaks for stretching, food and gas.

I’m very glad I took this trip. 😀

Dreams & Regrets

Read this through. It’s an important one.

I’m currently ill and lying in bed writing (netbooks rule). It first started three weeks ago with coughing that only got worse until I lost my voice. Then last week I was almost fine, went to work and all (perhaps too early). And this Sunday it came back, along with a really bad stomach. I went to the doctor yesterday who believed that I have gotten two different virus infections right after another. So nothing to do but rest and wait.
Which got me thinking.

When I am incapacitated and unable to do things actively, I long for them more, which is part of human nature. But when I am available to do them, I often don’t. I think people in general is spending way more time and energy dreaming about things than on actually fulfilling those dreams.
Example: I have wanted to go to Japan since I was 16, but didn’t do it until last year, and then only upon a suggestion from M. Of course, when I was 16 I couldn’t afford it. But what about when I was 21 or later? I could easily have saved up for it then if i was only motivated enough. But I think that’s exactly the problem. As I grow older, my motivation grows weaker and I spend more time longing and dreaming that doing.

So I am trying to change.
I don’t want to look back on my life and regret all the things I didn’t do, all the opportunities to try new things that I passed. I don’t mean to be fully dedicated to everything I do in your life, that’s likely impossible, but at least try things.

When we are children, we think “I wish I was a grown-up so that I could do this and that”. But why is it that when we reach adulthood, we often don’t do those things? Are we simply afraid that we will seem childish to do so, or are we so institutionalized that we cannot step outside the box for a moment and see other possibilities?
What did you say when you were a child?

-When I grow up I’m going to stay up all night watching all the Police Academy movies and eat ice cream!
-When I grow up I’m going to be a fireman and an inventor!
-When I grow up I’m going to have a green motorcycle!
-When I grow up I’m going to buy a pinball machine and have it in my living room next to my popcorn machine!
-When I grow up I’m going to go to Okinawa to learn Karate!

So what happened? Did the dreams disappear or are they still there, deep down? Think about what is stopping you from fulfilling those dreams. Money? Space? Time?

No, think again. What is really stopping you. Is it fear of ridicule? Fear of losing your safe, stable position in life? Does it mean quitting your job, leaving your apartment and go into the unknown?

Or are you simply not motivated enough? Do you not want it as much as you did as a child, or do you suppress that wish?

Think of it this way; When you are old and look back at your life, what will you most regret?

  1. That you took that crazy trip where you met all those people and saw all those awesome things?
  2. That you finally bought that car you had been dreaming of for 25 years?
  3. That you stepped up and spoke your mind no matter what other people thought?
  4. That you took that course and learned how to speak that language?
  5. That you recorded that album and released it independently when you at first didn’t get a contract?
  6. That you didn’t do any of the above?

I have a feeling most of us is waiting for something to happen, that we can ride the wave, follow the flow. But most of the time life doesn’t happen that way, not if you want to experience what you really want.  You have to start things yourself, make your own plans and sometimes dare ignore the unwritten rules on how things should be done.

So what have I done to follow my dreams? Not enough, it feels like. But the last year I have probably visited more countries than in my entire life, and in the last couple of months I have taken some decisions that will affect my near future at least:

  • I have applied for a driver’s license permit for a motorcycle and is currently looking to buy one. Might not happen until spring, but it will happen. As I said 15 years ago I would.
  • I have decided to study Japanese and eventually go back there.
  • I will sometime this week buy a cake and eat in bed for no reason more than that I enjoyed it as a child on my birthdays. And I don’t have to wait for my birthday if I don’t want to.

I am grown up now and can do what I want to do. I can be who I want to be. I can learn what I want to know. I can experience what I want to see. I can create what my imagination decides. And so can you. You only have  to want it enough and don’t be afraid.

I sincerely hope I can keep this up. I hope I will still be able to think this way 30 years from now.

My Cogwheel Heart Tattoo

Today I once again went to Nille at Salvation Tattoo to get some ink done.

I have always been fascinated by mechanics, robotics and mechatronics, and for the last few years I have been thinking about how to incorporate that into a tattoo. Early sketches covered basically the whole back, incorporating the biohazard sign I already have on my back into the design. Though I like biomechanical tattoos to a certain degree I now think an entire backpiece would be too much for this type of design (ask me again in five years though). The particular idea with a cogwheel using a heart as the hub first crossed my mind about a year ago, and shortly after I did the first design.

I have doodled on this design and changed quite a bit during the last year. The main problem lately has been that I have done too much details and thin lines. Since human skin is a living material it is extremely hard to make small details by pushing down ink between the skin layers (which is basically what you do). Even if you do, chances are that the details will be lost. Ink is a liquid, and liquids float and spreads out, making everything a bit fuzzy at close range. This is considerably more noticable on older tattoos, where it can be hard (or even impossible) to make out text that was clearly readable when the tattoo was first made. I have still kept a certain degree of details, mostly for thin light lines and shadows. We’ll see how they look like a few weeks from now. Also, it is quite a bit darker now (especially the lines) than it will be when healed.

I put in some symbolism in it as well, but will not go into details (let’s just say I’ve been hurt enough times). Also, can you find the Douglas Adams reference? 🙂

Tattooing your chest is a strange thing. It really hurts, but you don’t always feel the pain where you should. When Nille first started on the top right side, I felt it in the shoulder. Moving down, all of the sudden it felt like someone put a soldering iron to my nipple. This was not quite as bad as doing the elbow, but not far from it. Good thing I had my phone with me; Playing Solitaire and FreeCell partly took my mind from the pain – It helps to concentrate on something else.

So, what do you think?

My Serotonin Tattoo

I got another tattoo yesterday by Nille at Salvation Tattoo, a serotonin molecule.

Serotonin is both a classical neurotransmitter and a signaling molecule. To simplify things, it is a brain chemical that also can be found throughout the body (primarily in the digestive system). Its functions are among other things to help control happiness, sleep, aggression, impulsiveness, appetite, sexual lust, body temperature and metabolism. Due to a condition of mine, I have lower serotonin levels than most people. To fix that, I decided to add some of my own. 😉

I have stylized the molecule by replacing the letters HO, HN and NH2 with rings. Aside from that, I have thickened the lines and changed the angles on the inner parts slightly. If this should be entirely correct, I should replace the corners with rings as well, as they in this case represent carbon. But I chose style over substance, everything is still explainable and it looks much better this way. Big thanks to Micke Lind for the input on the molecule design!

Tattooing the elbow is probably the most painful ink I’ve done so far. The hearts on my inner upper arms did hurt a lot (and longer), but there were more twitching involved when doing the elbow.

Barcelona – Day IV

Yesterday we went to Mercat Del Encants, a huge marketplace with many hundred (maybe thousand) of stands where absolutely everything was sold. From young men selling brand new furniture to old ladies selling used adult magazines. Lots and lots of plain junk, and often the seller had just poured everything out on the ground. It was very crowded and stressed, and we didn’t really find anything of interest.

After a few hours we took the metro and decided to jump of at Arc de Triomf, built for the 1888 world fair. Therewe first encountered musicians that we at a distance thought were protesters for something (lots of banging drums and whistles), but when coming closer we realized they were kids from a local school or something.

On the other side of the arc there was another marketplace. The contrast to Mercat Del Encants was however huge. Here everything was extremely calm, not at all crowded and the loudspeakers played  soothing music. The market seemed to focus more on handcrafted items and there were also plenty of food (like an entire sausage stand) to be seen. We stopped for a while and had delicious falafel pita while sitting in the grass. About halfway through, the marketplace changed direction and started to focus on animal rights, new age, help organizations and such.

After stopping by for  a while at our apartment, we did some more alley-walking in old town. Since it was Saturday, a lot more street performers was there, taking advantage of the extra crowd of people coming in over the weekend. We also crashed another wedding, saw some ancient roman pillars, had some food and later some dessert and did some final shopping.

Today we are going home, and I better finish packing now. We will wait in Frankfurt for about 3½ hours. Good thing I have plenty of movies on my Eee. 🙂

Barcelona – Day III

Today we started the day by visiting the 60 meter high obelisk/statue of Christopher Columbus. We paid the 2.50 € fee and took the elevator up to the top, where we got a good view of the heart of Barcelona, the old town. After that, I tamed a giant metallic lion and rode it. 😉

The rest of the day we spent  alley-walking in the old town (where we live). We walked for hours and still didn’t covered half of it. Some fun shopping and surprisingly good and cheap meals were also included in the day. When the cold hit and we were both tired and with aching legs, we retired to the apartment for some relaxing.

When getting hungry again we went out for dinner and found an Italian restaurant where you could get a three-course dinner for 6.95 €. The female bouncer was very nice but the male waiter was very unengaged and almost rude. Dessert consisted of an apple.

On the way back  we bought some snacks, and now we are going to watch a movie. 🙂

Barcelona – Day II

Buildings, buildings, buildings

Today we went sightseeing in Barcelona. First stop was the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, an enormous church that has been in construction since 1882 and is expected to last until at least 2026. We never went inside due to the extreme long line youn had to wait in. After that we walked around, ate bad expensive paella and watched buldings for a few hours or so. Getting close to our apartment, we jumped on an overpriced sightseeing bus and took a tour around parts of Barcelona. After almost two hours we were back were we started and decided to walk some  ofe the back streets and alleys near our apartment in old town. We started to get hungry again and had some good and fairly cheap local pan pizza.

By this time we were getting cold (it had rained twice earlier that in the day) so we went back to the hotel for a while to relax and warm up.

After some time we went back out again in a new direction. Walked for a few hours, found a giant cat, had a drink and bought some snacks on the way back. Now we are going to watch a movie: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. 😉

Barcelona – Day I

My mom has a nice tradition. Whenever we kids turn 30, she takes us to a destination of our choice in Europe, just the two of us. Since I turned 30 just over a month ago,  it was my turn. I picked Barcelona.

My brother gave us a ride to the airport at 7 in the morning, and checking in went fine. We changed plane in Frankfurt and spent time watching two movies on my Eee: The Heroes of Telemark and The Good Thief. Both were surprisingly good!

After arriving in Barcelona we took the aerobus in to town. instead of taking a taxi to our hotel we decided to walk. Strolling through La Rambla, we  arrived at our apartment around 4 in the afternoon.

Shortly after, we went for a walk, did some minor shopping and had tapas.

Today we will have a general sightseeing day.
